Strange -

I get different scan results when I scan B/W from the glass, or from
the ADT. The former is fine. The latter is over-exposed no matter
which settings I try. I get big black blotches.

Anyone else have this problem? I wud like to use the ADT because I
have multiple document pages.

I don't know this printer but most all-in-one printers with an ADF work in very
similar ways.
They use the same scanner head for both the flat bed and the ADF, the
difference is that the scanner head moves when using the flat bed and is
stationary when using the ADF.
In the case of the ADF there is usually a fairly narrow window at one end of
the flat bed that the scanner head sits under.
Because the same electronics and the same scanner head is used for both the
flat bed and the ADF the most likely cause is some sort of contamination on the
narrow window. I suggest you carefully clean it with a non abrasive window
cleaner.

I shud have inluded the fact that this printer is brand new. Have
only had it a month - only used it to scan a few from the flat bed - I
only discovered my anomaly when I tried the ADF and its double-sided
scsnning, which is the main eason I bought the d'ed thing. Scanning
from the flat bed did not show the problem. I'll try a cleaner.

Oh well. There's always something.
Thanks

If that doesn't work you should consider getting it replaced or repaired under
warranty.

I have emailed them about the problem.

I went ahead and cleaned the ADF mechanisms and the scanner glass with
a microfiber cloth and a little glass cleaner. I felt I shouldn't
have to do this because the printer is brand new, but I did it anyway.
Guess what? It now scans nicely, even double sided. Who would
figger?
Thanks for helps

Good news
It is a very common cause of ADF scanner issues and can be the result of dust
or other contaminants. The cause have seen most often is Twink (whitener) from
a page that is copied before the twink has dried fully.
