Hello.

Tonight, my very old HP Photosmart 8450 printer lost the fairly new HP
Tri-Color Print Cartridge 97 cartridge (2014/08/24 Z; 1782606105249600)
after I printed out a three/3 pages of B&W PDF application form after
turning on the printer for a few minutes.

The printer showed a blinking red print button border and its screen
says "Color cartridge failed. Replace it, or ... remove it to print
using ink-backup printing mode."

I tried removing and reinserting the cartridge, turning off and on
including unplugging its power cable, cleaning cartridge and printer's
cartridge holder connection, etc. Nothing fixed it. :(

What happened? I didn't even use much of this year old cartridge (think
it had 3/4th of ink left). I don't have its original packaging and
papers. Can I RMA it back to HP for free since I ordered it online
through Amazon?

I had to print without this color (thanks God it lets me print even
without colors). :( Thank you in advance. :)

Amazon order was on 11/26/2012 from

other resellers). It is not returnable too since its window expired on
December 28, 2012. :(

Almost $40 Amazon order was on 11/26/2012 from

other resellers). It is not returnable too since its window expired on

I finally got a HP to e-mail me about this:

"... You need to know that the expiration date is related to an unopened
cartridge, but after that, I would like to know when did you open it,
also be aware that this cartridge is almost two years old in your
possession, we do not advice tothe customers to have cartridge storage
for more than 6 months, even this could be not advisable, but some
customers do that.

Regarding the RMA, well, it will not be possible for me to offer you
that, it is not an option..."

Is this true? :( Thank you in advance. :)

Lousy customer service if you ask me. He/she didn't say if it was still good - just that they don't recommend..... blah blah blah.... I suspect the cartridge is fine, but just guessing. The ink should be OK for sure.

I had a problem with a Canon BJC-5100 that was a few years old. One of the print heads got hot enough to melt the plastic. I contacted Canon and they send me a FedEx label pre-paid and asked me to send it to them, and they would send me a new printer. THAT's what I customer service. Since then I have bought nothing but Canon printers.

I finally got HP to RMA. Sheesh. I replaced the problematic cartridge
with a new one, and it worked fine. The old one went bad for whatever
reason. I sent the broken one back to HP to RMA.

Nice. I think my next printer will be pure laser. Frak these inkjets.

Yeah, that's how I feel. I had a few inkjets back when, and the
ink cartridges ran out at inopportune times, or dried up and wouldn't
resurrect, the ink was expensive, etc. Eventually a FOAF upgraded and
gave me his old dot matrix. It worked for maybe 10 years. Some metal
plate on the printhead recently came out of alignment, and I'm skipping
the whole inkjet scene and going directly to laser. You can get a crappy
seconhand laser printer for <$20 and a nice secondhand one for <$100.

Hi,

I had a disgraceful set of experiences with H-P. I bought a discontinued
but brand new HP 8250 printer in a sealed box. After I set up the CD-ROM
software into my PC, I inserted the box's inks into the printer, and got
an on-screen message that I used the wrong cartridges, and I must use
starter inks.

I used the inks in the sealed box. I got conflicting replies from H-P: I
can buy the starter inks, no,they are not made any more, etc.. Finally,
they said that my brand new printer will NEVER PRINT as I do not have
starter inks. So my $ investment is gone with the wind, and I have a
brand new non-functioning printer. Their e-mail and telephone service is
abominable.

I finally gave up with my HP crap-o-matic. When copying there is no image 1/2-inch from the top or bottom and no way I have found to change any settings.

Last straw was I was going to print addresses on 1000 postcards which I had done before with this POS. I was up against a post office deadline. Started to print them and the first one would not feed. I played around with it bending them, etc., and got them to feed but the addreses were crooked. I found that if I pushed them in one at a time, the address was less crooked. Then I started, printed about 4 cards and the power for the whole neighborhood went out.

I had spent an hour trying to get the printer to work, which would have been enough time to print all the cards. Power was out 2 hours, post office deadline gone, and all cards went in the trash.

A good lesson for me -- (1) never buy HP products again and (2) if any device does not start working within 5 mintues, take it back.

After this HP episode, I bought an Espon, connected it and turned it and computer on, and started printing right away. No problem with postcards, etc.

HP SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm REALLY glad that Carly Poker-Face Fiorina dropped out of the Rep presidential race. What a DISASTER the country would be in with an ex-HP moron as president.
